Author and divorcee.
After a marriage of 21 years, I suddenly found myself forced into making a decision. A decision I did not know at the time, would dramatically change my life, as I than new it. I was not prepared mentally, emotionally, or financially for what was to take place over the course of the next 6 years.
Living in a community property state, I, like so many others, thought the process of divorce would be easy. I believed I and my wife at that time, could make an amicable split and divide our estate equitably. Nothing could have been further from the truth.
During those six years I learned the system is not always fair. The system is not always just. I didn’t know what I didn’t know. As a result, it cost me thousands of additional dollars in out-of-pocket expenses, attorney fees, court costs, and alimony, all because of what I didn’t know, nor did I have any idea of what to expect of my attorney or from the court and the process. I like so many others, was a victim of the system. I learned it does not matter whether you are in front of a courtroom judge, commissioner, mediator, arbitrator, your own attorney or the other sides attorney, many of them have their own biases, which may work against you. Make no mistake about it: Divorce is a business, and you need to approach it as such! Don’t be a victim! Know what you need to know!
